Like other countries, working in Cambodia requires work permit for foreign workers, and companies in the territory of Cambodia employing foreign employees are obligatory to request for quota hiring them.
In Cambodia, work permit shall be renewed annually as required by law, otherwise resulting in some form of penalties. Having said so, it seems quite easy to request for a Work Permit, but the practicality involves with a lot of complicated processes and time consuming.
The complexity results not only from the government side but also from the private sector side. If foreign employees are new to working in Cambodia from developed countries, they may feel surprised and unhappy with the conditions of application for work permit here and say it is all the government’s mistakes. Fortunately, if they work here for sufficiently long time and understand their working culture, they will understand more and get used to it.
Three steps are required in order to request for work permit:
- Employee Declaration: companies declares that they will be hiring foreign employees.
- Request for Quota: companies send a request to the government agency notifying the number of foreign employee(s) they are going to hire.
- Request for work permit: companies request for work permit for their employees.
